ERPP28L: PVDC-Free Barrier BOPP Film for High-Speed HFFS Packaging

High-speed horizontal and vertical form-fill-seal packaging lines for food products — biscuits, crackers, confectionery, dry snacks — require films that combine low seal initiation temperature, reliable hot-tack, and sufficient moisture and oxygen barrier to protect product quality and extend shelf life. Conventionally, these requirements have been met with BOPP films carrying PVdC or acrylic coatings. Both approaches deliver barrier performance, but at a cost : PVdC is incompatible with PP recycling streams and subject to increasing regulatory and brand-owner pressure, while acrylic coatings add a processing step and a material that affects recyclability.

ERPP28L is Bioxpack’s answer to this constraint. A clear co-extruded specialty BOPP film with improved moisture and oxygen barrier, both sides sealable at very low temperature, free of PVdC, acrylics, bisphenol A and phthalates — and recyclable. It runs on HFFS and VFFS machines at high speed without modification, delivering the barrier and sealing performance food converters need within a cleaner, more sustainable film structure.

What Makes ERPP28L Different from Coated Barrier Films

Most barrier BOPP films on the market achieve their moisture and oxygen performance through coating — applying a layer of PVdC or acrylic to a standard BOPP substrate after extrusion. This approach works, but introduces several constraints that are becoming increasingly relevant for converters and brand owners.

PVdC coating delivers high barrier but is incompatible with PP mechanical recycling streams — making it a liability in structures that need to meet CEFLEX design-for-recycling guidelines or EU PPWR recyclability requirements. Acrylic coatings avoid the PVdC issue but add a solvent or water-based processing step, introduce an additional material layer, and create their own recyclability questions in mono-material PP design.

ERPP28L achieves its barrier performance through co-extrusion — the barrier properties are built into the film structure during extrusion, not applied afterwards. The result is a cleaner structure : no coatings, no PVdC, no acrylics, one material family, fully recyclable. The film carries improved moisture and oxygen barrier values compared to standard BOPP grades, with both sides sealable at very low temperature — enabling it to run as a single-web solution on HFFS and VFFS lines without a dedicated sealant film.

Key Properties and Converting Performance

ERPP28L is available at 20, 25 and 30 microns — a thickness range that covers both standard and downgauged formats for food flowpack applications. The film delivers excellent gloss and optical clarity, making it suitable for applications where product visibility and print quality are purchasing criteria for brand owners.

Both surfaces are sealable at very low temperature, with a broad operating window across HFFS and VFFS machine types and speeds. Low seal initiation temperature on the untreated side enables high-speed line operation with a wide process window — critical for converters running variable product formats or mixed SKUs on the same line. The film’s COF profile on both treated and untreated surfaces is calibrated for smooth running on modern packaging equipment without requiring machine adjustment.

Barrier performance: moisture and oxygen transmission — is improved versus standard BOPP co-extruded grades, providing meaningful shelf life extension for dry food products sensitive to moisture ingress or oxygen exposure. Full specifications are available in the technical data sheet.

Applications

ERPP28L is designed for food packaging on HFFS and VFFS lines where barrier performance, high-speed runnability and clean material composition are simultaneously required.

Primary applications include biscuit and bakery flowpack — where moisture barrier protects crispiness and shelf life without PVdC. Dry snack and confectionery packaging — where the combination of clarity, gloss and barrier supports premium shelf presentation. Single-web HFFS formats — where both-sides sealability eliminates the need for a lamination step and a separate sealant film, reducing converting complexity and material cost.

And non-food formats — personal care and cosmetic single-dose sachets where PVDC-free and acrylic-free composition supports cleaner product labelling.

For converters currently running PVdC-coated or acrylic-coated BOPP barrier films and evaluating a transition to a cleaner structure, ERPP28L is a direct alternative that runs on existing equipment without machine modification.

Sustainability and Compliance

ERPP28L is recyclable in the PP mechanical recycling stream. Free of PVdC, acrylics, bisphenol A, phthalates and heavy metals. Produced under BRC Packaging Materials certification at Bioxpack’s manufacturing facility in Llanera, Asturias, Spain.

Compatible with CEFLEX design-for-recycling guidelines for PP mono-material flexible packaging structures when used as part of an all-PP laminate.

For brand owners working toward EU PPWR compliance targets or voluntary recyclability commitments, ERPP28L provides a technically qualified barrier option within a recyclable PP structure — without the compromises associated with PVdC or acrylic coated alternatives.
