Specialty BOPP Films for Flexible Packaging - ER-PP Range

Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) remains the most widely used substrate in flexible packaging, combining optical clarity, moisture barrier, mechanical strength and high-speed machinability at competitive cost. What separates a specialty BOPP film from a commodity grade is the precision of its formulation: COF values engineered for specific machine types, seal initiation temperatures matched to converting line speeds, surface treatments optimised for flexographic or gravure printing, and barrier coatings that eliminate PVDC without compromising performance.

Bioxpack’s ER-PP range covers 15 specialty BOPP grades, developed and produced at our manufacturing site in Europe. Each grade is designed for a specific converting application, from very low temperature sealing (VLTS) films for high-speed horizontal flowpack lines to high-rigidity, non-sealable grades for infusion sachet machines, and transparent IML films for label converting.

The range covers:

  • thicknesses from 15 to 50 microns,
  • in sealable, non-sealable,
  • metallized, matt and white opaque versions.

All grades are recyclable, free from bisphenol A, phthalates and heavy metals, and produced under BRC Packaging Materials certification.

What Makes a Specialty BOPP Film

Standard BOPP films are produced with broad tolerances suited to generic applications. Specialty grades are engineered with tighter specifications — narrower COF ranges, controlled seal initiation temperatures, defined surface tension levels, specific shrinkage profiles — to solve real converting problems on specific machine types.

At Bioxpack, every ER-PP grade is developed from a defined converting need.

  • The infusion grades are formulated around the specific demands of very high-speed HFFS sachet lines.
  • The metallized grade is engineered to deliver high-barrier performance within a recyclable PP structure.
  • The matt and white opaque grades combine VLTS sealing with the optical finish required for premium brand aesthetics.

This is what specialty means in practice : a precise answer to each converting constraint, not a wider catalogue.

PVDC-free and recyclable alternative

Developed to replace non-recyclable and highly polluting for the environment materials like PVDC. ER-PP enables you to meet sustainability goals without compromising on machinability, sealing or printability. A future-ready solution for eco-conscious converters.

Designed for high-speed packaging lines

With optimized COF levels (high or low) and a downgauged structure, ER-PP is engineered to perform on fast flow-pack and vertical lines. Its heat-sealability and excellent runnability ensure smooth, reliable packaging — even at industrial speed.

High-barrier film for food, cosmetics, and more

ER-PP provides advanced protection against oxygen and humidity, ensuring extended shelf life for sensitive products like biscuits, tea bags, or cosmetic sachets. Ideal for brands seeking both visual appeal and functional performance.

ER-PP Range: BOPP Films by Application

Flowpack & High-Speed HFFS/VFFS Packaging

The core of the ER-PP range is built around flowpack performance. Four grades cover the main configurations encountered on horizontal and vertical form-fill-seal lines for food, confectionery, bakery and personal care products — from standard versatile grades printable on flexographic and gravure machines, to VLTS variants engineered for lines where very low sealing temperature and hot-tack performance are critical, and a downgauging grade for applications where material reduction is a priority without compromising seal integrity. High or low COF versions are available depending on machine configuration.

Metallized High-Barrier Films

Bioxpack's metallized specialty BOPP grade delivers high-barrier performance against moisture and oxygen within a recyclable PP structure — addressing applications where aluminium foil or complex multilayer structures were previously required. Available at multiple thicknesses, it combines ultra-high stiffness with low sealing temperature on the untreated side, suitable for flowpack, lamination and doypack formats. Two additional sealable BOPP grades offer intermediate barrier levels with PVDC-free and acrylic-free formulations for both-sides sealable structures on HFFS and VFFS lines.

Infusion & Herbal Tea Sachet Packaging

Infusion packaging is one of the most demanding BOPP applications. Very high-speed HFFS machines, transparent weld requirements and specific rigidity make this segment unsuitable for standard flowpack grades. Bioxpack's infusion-specific grades are based on a polypropylene copolymer formulation with a VLTS sealing layer, delivering the wide sealing temperature range, excellent hot-tack and weld transparency that high-speed tea and herbal sachet lines require. A non-printable variant is available for outer wrap formats. Both grades are fully recyclable. A biodegradable equivalent is available.

Matt & White Opaque Films

The matt specialty grade delivers a deep, consistent matte effect combined with VLTS sealing technology, designed for high-speed horizontal flowpack applications where premium brand aesthetics require a soft-touch visual finish within a recyclable PP structure. The white opaque variant provides opacity without a second lamination layer, suitable for HFFS and VFFS converting. Both grades offer low COF for smooth machine running.

Lamination & Converting

Two grades address lamination and adhesive tape converting. The lamination grade offers extraordinary thermal resistance, excellent flatness and dimensional stability — key properties for high-speed lamination processes. Its high tensile strength in both machine and transverse directions makes it one of the mechanically strongest grades in the range. The adhesive tape grade features a highly treated layer guaranteeing excellent adhesion, with consistent dimensional stability under heat. Both grades are non-sealable, both-side treated, and recyclable.

In-Mould Labelling & Label Converting

The IML grade is a transparent specialty BOPP film, both-side treated and non-heat-sealable, formulated for cut & stack and in-mould labelling applications. Its face substrate is optimised for self-adhesive label structures compatible with sheet-fed and roll-fed printing. Improved sliding and anti-static characteristics facilitate laminating and die-cutting at high speed. Very low shrinkage values make it one of the most dimensionally stable grades in the range — critical for label converting accuracy.

Common Technical Properties Across the ER-PP Range

All ER-PP specialty BOPP grades share a common foundation : biaxial orientation of polypropylene on industrial-scale extrusion lines, consistent batch-to-batch quality under BRC Packaging Materials certification, and formulations free from bisphenol A, phthalates and heavy metals.

Across the range, treated surfaces deliver reliable printability on flexographic and gravure equipment. Shrinkage values are controlled for dimensional stability on high-speed converting lines. Sealable grades offer hot-tack performance suited to modern HFFS and VFFS machines.

Full technical specifications — COF values, seal initiation temperatures, OTR, WVTR, tensile strength and elongation — are available in the individual technical data sheets for each grade.

Applications for our BOPP film: Markets Served

The ER-PP range covers the full spectrum of BOPP flexible packaging applications :

  • bakery and biscuit flowpack,
  • snack and confectionery packaging,
  • dry food pouches,
  • infusion and tea sachet converting,
  • personal care and cosmetic single-dose formats,
  • and technical lamination for labels and adhesive tapes.

For converters transitioning from multilayer laminates containing PET, PA or aluminium foil, several ER-PP grades are qualified for mono-material PP structures compliant with CEFLEX design guidelines and EU PPWR recyclability requirements for 2030.
